"Know Thyself"
Admit it, we're all obsessed with our personality types. We
pore over our horoscopes and take quiz after quiz to try and understand
ourselves better. But why? Shouldn't we, of all people, understand ourselves
the best?
The importance of personality quizzes doesn't lie in knowing
that we are guardians or artisans or if we are blues or oranges- it is
understanding that our personality influences the choices we make, and impacts
how we perceive the world around us.
There isn’t one kind of personality that is better or worse
than any other- there is a time and a place for them all. Whether you be
outgoing and talkative, or timid and shy, knowing these characteristics about
yourself only helps you to make wise decisions and become the most engaging and
effective citizen you can be.
Though we may not be able to change our personality, understanding
ourselves and how we make decisions is crucial to becoming not only successful
within our academics or career fields, but also in creating and fostering
relationships with others.
As humans, we feel a constant need to identify with others. We
feel the need to be included, and grouped together with those who are like us.
Perhaps that is why we take that BuzzFeed quiz to decide what Star Wars
character we are most like, or use a sorter to decide which Hogwarts house we
would be placed in.
Think of it this way- if our personality defines us, shouldn’t
that be a definition we know by heart?

I love taking personality tests! I think that they can tell a lot about a person. There is a sense of community that comes from being able to identify with others. We all strive to have a strong community base. Whether we are introverts or extraverts, we need to be around others. Having interactions with others is crucial for our well being.
ReplyDeleteWe have all been on Facebook when we come across a quiz one of our friends have taken and posted the results. This prompts us to take the same quiz to see how we measure up to our friend. We, readily, dismiss the results if we think they are not quite right or if we like the results we will post them alongside our friend's post. We are always looking for validation among our community of friends and often times see ourselves differently than their view of ourselves. We read self-help books and watch YouTube videos in search of ways to improve ourselves and our relationships with others. Self-reflection and acceptance of the results are often times hard to digest.
ReplyDeleteI think its interesting to not only learn more about ourselves, but learn that we learn something new about ourselves, as well as the people we are closest to, everyday! People change, even if we don't realize it immediately. Our likes, styles, and interest are always adapting to the new us. Studies even show that our taste buds change every 7 years- we love to learn about ourselves because we can't just quite keep up with ourself!
